After securing my election as the County Coroner, through the election of the Kosciusko Republican Party, my team and I, including Chief Deputy Coroner Paul Schmitt initiated transformative changes from the beginning.
Our primary objective was to revamp and modernize the office, aiming to enhance our service delivery to the community and optimize the utilization of taxpayers' funds.
Convening with our team, we promptly instituted new policies and procedures. Recognizing a historical issue of incomplete case resolutions, we mandated electronic documentation of all cases in our case management system.
Working with the Indiana State Health Department we have successfully secured grants to bolster our deputies abilities to help better investigate scenes.
In addition to this new relationship with the state health department we have relationships with Kosciusko Sheriff's Department, Kosciusko Prosecutor's Office, Indiana Department of Child Services, Warsaw Police Department and other county police, fire, and EMS departments.
We have also fostered community engagement by participating in educational events, striving to raise awareness about the role and functions of the coroner's office.
We have also started helping the community become more aware of our office with social media along with showing the community how the drug epidemic is affecting our friends, neighbors and family members.
We have also just formed the first Suicide & Overdose Fatality Review Team in Kosciusko County. This will bring together professionals who work to prevent future suicide and overdose deaths by reviewing cases, finding risk factors, and contributing circumstances to help recommend policies, practices, and programs for prevents. This program can help lead to community-informed recommendations.
After taking office I collaborated closely with the Kosciusko County Council and the Kosciusko Auditor's Office to address and rectify budgetary challenges that the coroner's office had encountered in previous years.
What Does The Coroners Office Do
Coroners investigates and determines a person’s cause and manner of death, particularly in cases when the individual died under unusual circumstances. The office consoles families, advocates for the deceased, and gives information to police and courts to prosecute suspected criminals.
A key focus of mine at the Kosciusko Coroner's Office was to raise awareness within the community, not only about our office but also about the pervasive impact of the drug epidemic on our young community members. In collaboration with the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and Highway Department, we developed a drug awareness sign. Additionally, we strive to keep the community informed about emerging issues affecting our locality.
Upon assuming office, we engaged in discussions with key entities, including the Kosciusko Prosecutor's Office, Kosciusko Sheriff's Department, Warsaw Police Department, NET 43, and various other local departments. These meetings aimed to explore ways in which the coroner's office could contribute collaboratively. Our objective was to facilitate seamless access to our reports and information for each department, enabling them to leverage our insights in their investigations. Additionally, we established a drug overdose procedure to assist the Prosecutor's Office in prosecuting individuals involved in drug dealings leading to fatalities.
Your support makes a vital difference in our coroner election campaign. With your generous donation, you're investing in a safer, more transparent community. Together, we can ensure that our coroner's office operates with integrity, compassion, and efficiency, prioritizing the well-being of our citizens. Thank you!
